Uploading Junko Enoshima's AI into the Future Foundation's Neo World Program, Izuru himself entered it to observe his experiment firsthand, purposefully wiping the memories of his classmates to have an unbiased view. After witnessing Chiaki Nanami's death and the fond words she had for him, Kamukura decided to determine which was more unpredictable: Despair or Hope.
But for all his talent, Izuru cared little for the talentless "ticks" that populated the world, and thus allowed the world to fall into despair as part of Junko Enoshima's rampage. Named after the Hope's Peak's founder, the academy hoped that the newly created epitome of talent would lead humanity to a golden age as the so called "Ultimate Hope". Izuru is the subject of the Hope Cultivation Plan that is now imbued with the talents of every student who had ever attended Hope's Peak Academy after the execution of said project. The person once known as Hajime Hinata, now turned into the person that is called Izuru Kamukura. He then sets out to finally remove the lingering influence that Junko had inflicted onto the world itself, reforming the Remnants of Despair, and taking the blame for the Future Foundation regarding the Final Killing Game, to clear the organization's name.
As a result, Hajime's and Izuru's personalities mingled, placing Hajime in control while retaining all of his amazing talents. But before they could fall into despair, they were motivated by a Hajime that was coming to terms with his own self.
Horrified and disgusted by what they had done while under the influence of Junko's brainwashing, the remaining students almost fell into despair. It was also revealed that the Class-77-B became the Ultimate Despair in the past due to Junko Enoshima's brainwashing, and that they were forced to spread despair across the entire world. Nearing the end of the game, it is finally revealed that they were in a highly advanced artificial reality, often said to contain the ultimate reality, and that Hajime was truly talentless compared to his classmates which are the "Ultimates". In the first class trial, Hajime was always the one to lead the other students in their investigation, in which is also true for the other class trials. At first, no one believed that anyone would truly kill someone, but their state of denial was proven wrong as they encounter the first murder. Because of this rule, the innocent students must work together to find the blackened to survive. Because if the blackened gets found out in the class trial, the killer will get punished, and executed. Monokuma reveals that they are going to participate in a Mutual Killing Game, also known as the Killing School Trip, he explains that if a student wants to escape the island, they must murder a classmate in secret, and the blackened must survive a class trial. Monokuma tells everyone to go to the Jabberwock Park, defeats Usami, and then turns her into Monomi, in which Monokuma insists that the both of them are siblings. The whole class was starting to bond but was interrupted by Monokuma shortly after. Usami appears inside the classroom and confuses everyone, only to then tell them that they were going on a school trip and opened up the classroom only to reveal a beach, which confused everyone even more. Not long after, he met his fifteen other classmates. He wakes up and then finds himself in front of a door that gave him an urge to open. Hajime, the student that was going to attend the Hope's Peak Academy he so admired, had been narrating his memories, as well as his hopes and ambition, and before he could say what he wanted to become, the memories starts to fade (due to the Izuru Kamukura project). Unbeknownst to him, the procedure involved massive modifications to his brain that nearly drove him to insanity before he was lobotomized, effectively banishing his feelings, memories, hobbies, and his very identity to the darkest recesses of his mind.
Burning with admiration and envy towards the incredibly gifted students that populated the academy, Hajime willingly became the subject of the Hope Cultivation Program in hopes of obtaining a talent of his own. Hajime Hinata was initially a talentless reserve course student at Hope's Peak Academy.
